What’s particularly striking: Nearly 48% of diagnosed Bahamian women are under the age of 50. The average age of diagnosis is about 42 years — far younger than in many developed countries. Around 44% of women are diagnosed at Stage III or Stage IV , meaning many cases are detected late. Roughly 23% of Bahamian women with breast cancer carry a BRCA1 gene mutation , making genetic risk especially significant. These statistics underscore a harsh reality: too many women are diagnosed too late, and too many carry risks that go unchecked. Why Awareness Is More Than a Campaign Early detection saves lives. When caught in its initial stages, breast cancer treatment is far more effective. Education changes behavior. Awareness encourages self-exams and timely check-ups. Genetic screening matters.
